The data also went to a cloud-based dashboard that suggested how management should make workforce changes.

This approach brought a 67% reduction in lost work time. It also lowered the number of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recordable injuries by 19%. However, these positive examples do not suggest that technology always enhances ergonomics.

Recent research about using exoskeletons to assist with lifting tasks shows they may not offer the benefits previously thought. A team found that those products offered only marginal reductions in spinal shear loads for wearers. More importantly, the results indicated that the cognitive costs associated with learning how to work while wearing an exoskeleton could cancel out those minor advantages.

5. Listen to Your Body

Most people know that warehouse work is often strenuous. Unfortunately, that means some of them may overlook the importance of staying aware of how their body feels. Factors like a person’s medication, the amount of sleep they get, and mental distractions could make them more or less able to avoid strain at work.

People should always speak to their supervisors if they believe they’re unable to do a task for any reason. It’s also necessary to be aware of how changes in a routine could affect a person’s capabilities. Someone may have lifted boxes all day long for decades without issues. But, if they take two months off to recover from a severe illness, they’ll need to work back up to that point.

Taking enough breaks is also essential. Experts recommend taking 20-second microbreaks every 20 minutes. Additionally, people should rest for three to five minutes at least every hour. Things like standing up if sitting down and taking a short, brisk walk away from the workstation are also useful during short breaks.

Making minor tweaks to the body’s positioning can also help. If a person notices unusual body aches during a shift, a quick, easy thing to do is correct their posture. Sometimes, when people get particularly absorbed in work, they won’t notice slouching or other problems that could strain the body until something starts to hurt.
